Introduction

"Compilation Embodying Benevolence"

This page is cultural documentation, not medical advice.

A Ming-dynasty comprehensive medical handbook by Peng Yongguang (Jiajing reign era, mid-16th century), completed around 1548. A clinical formula collection that preserves the canonical "heart-kidney dual nourishment" formula Bǎi Zǐ Yǎng Xīn Wán.

The Tiren Huibian is a mid-Ming clinical formula reference that systematically compiled formulas for "heart-spirit" (心神) and "kidney-essence" (肾精) deficiency patterns. The text is the canonical source of Bǎi Zǐ Yǎng Xīn Wán (柏子养心丸, "Biota Heart-Nourishing Pill"), a formula that combines Bǎi Zǐ Rén (Biota seed) and Suan Zao Ren (sour jujube seed) for "calming the spirit" with Shu Di Huang, Dang Gui, and other blood-nourishing herbs, designed for "heart-kidney non-communication with qi-blood insufficiency" (心肾不交、气血不足) presentations (insomnia, frequent dreaming, palpitations, poor memory). The formula is, in modern Chinese pharmacy, one of the standard 中成药 for the "anxious overworked" presentation.

Historical background

The Tǐrén Huìbiān (《体仁汇编》) was compiled by Peng Yongguang during the Jiajing reign of the Ming dynasty and completed around 1548, reflecting the author's systematic synthesis of mid-Ming clinical formulas with particular attention to the "heart-kidney axis" (心肾) regulatory framework. The text emerged within the mid-Ming formula-collection movement, a period of intensive compilation activity that sought to organize the clinical experience accumulated since the Jin-Yuan medical debates of the 12th-13th centuries. The Tǐrén Huìbiān circulated in printed form during the late Ming and throughout the Qing dynasty, and was included in several private medical anthologies and reprint series.…
