About this page

This page is a cultural reference, not a diagnostic tool. Health concerns listed here are tags that explain why certain formulas are discussed together — they do not map 1:1 to Western medical diagnoses.

Background

In TCM, the everyday complaint of "poor sleep" is split into several patterns: "heart-spleen deficiency" (mind will not quiet down, fatigue on waking, overthinking), "liver qi stagnation transforming into fire" (irritability, restlessness, bitter taste), and "heart-kidney non-communication" (frequent waking, a sense of "empty heat" at night). The medicines on this page are discussed in Chinese households for these patterns. None of them is a sedative in the Western pharmacological sense, and none is a treatment for clinical insomnia. For persistent sleep problems, clinical evaluation is the appropriate next step.

    Calculus Bovis Heart-Clearing

    牛黄清心丸(局方)

  • Formula · Chuān Bèi Pí Pá Gāo

    Chuanbei Loquat Syrup

    川贝枇杷膏

  • Formula · Ān Shén Bǔ Xīn Wán

    Calm-Spirit Heart-Tonifying

    安神补心丸

  • Formula · Rén Shēn Guī Pí Wán

    Ginseng Spleen-Returning

    人参归脾丸

A "yi-qi bu-xue, jian-pi yang-xin" (augment qi, tonify blood, strengthen the spleen, nourish the heart) formula from Yan Yonghe's "Formulary to Aid the Living" (1253), the ginseng-substituted, stronger form of the classical Gui Pi Tang.

  • Formula · Bǎi Zǐ Yǎng Xīn Wán

    Biota Heart-Nourishing
