PCMWiki is an encyclopedia of Chinese patent medicines. It is built to help readers understand what each formula is, what it has traditionally been used for, where it came from, and what is known or unknown about its safety. It is not built to help a reader diagnose a personal condition or pick a formula for personal use. That distinction is the whole reason the encyclopedia uses the consistent phrase "traditionally used for" throughout: the language is deliberately bounded to describe tradition, and does not promise any particular outcome for a specific person. Self-prescribing is risky for two reasons. First, TCM pattern identification is its own skill — many patterns can look superficially similar but call for opposite approaches (yin deficiency vs. yang deficiency, for example). Second, a formula that is "appropriate in tradition" can still be wrong for a particular person, especially during pregnancy, alongside other medications, or in combination with another chronic condition. PCMWiki does not collect the personal information a practitioner would need to make a safe recommendation, and it is not designed to be read in place of one. What PCMWiki can do well: help you arrive at a TCM consultation already familiar with the formulas you might discuss, or help you understand what a formula is when you see it on a pharmacy shelf or mentioned in a book. That is a useful role. Personal use decisions should still be made with a qualified practitioner.
