In TCM tongue diagnosis, the coating is read alongside the tongue body color, the sublingual veins, and the rest of the four examinations (looking, listening/smelling, asking, feeling the pulse). A thick white coating right after waking or after a heavy meal is largely physiological. Coffee, tea, curry, candy, and recently taken Chinese herbal decoctions can all stain the coating and make it appear thicker than it really is. Persistent thick coatings, especially yellow or greasy, are what TCM practitioners tend to associate with patterns such as damp-heat or spleen qi deficiency — but even then, it is one piece of evidence, not a diagnosis by itself. If you are wondering about your own coating, the useful question is usually "has it changed noticeably over weeks?" rather than "is it thick right now?".
