Can I take Liuwei Dihuang Wan every day for years?

It is traditionally used for short to medium courses, not as a lifelong daily supplement — though many Chinese households do use it that way.

Category: Safety & long-term use

In the traditional framing, Liuwei Dihuang Wan is prescribed for a specific pattern (kidney yin deficiency) over a defined period, then tapered. The original 12th-century pediatric text that first recorded it presents it as a course of treatment, not a daily vitamin. In modern practice, however, many middle-aged adults in China do take it for years as a low-grade tonic, more out of habit than prescription. Surveys consistently show most self-medicating users cannot name the six herbs, let alone articulate when it is traditionally considered appropriate versus inappropriate. People with active digestive upset, fever, or what TCM texts describe as spleen yang deficiency are typically advised to pause or avoid it. It is still a herbal formula, not a vitamin — interactions with prescription medicines are not well studied. As with any long-running tonic, the person who first recommended it (your physician or pharmacist) is the right person to ask before changing course.
